ANALYSIS Houston Sports NFL RUMORS

Texans do not want to Win

Before I begin this article, I believe the Texans should change their name to the Houston Seahawks. They keep trading their most valuable players there so I don’t see why not? Anyways, back to the article.

Rumors in the NFL happen all the time. Reports of players from different teams either being traded to another team, or even your favorite team, occurs frequently in the off-season. When there is no games being played or no groundbreaking news happening, rumors spread to keep the fans entertained. This is nothing new.

I thought this exact thing when rumors were going around about a possible Jadeveon Clowney trade. Because of his impact, because of how great of a player he is, I knew for a fact that the Texans wouldn’t trade him. In fact, why would they? In a defense where everyone outside of J.J. Watt and Whitney Mercilus has struggled to apply consistent pressure, why would they trade Clowney? This season, the Texans will face talents such as Tom Brady, Patrick Mahomes, Drew Brees, Matt Ryan, Cam Newton, Phillip Rivers, and more. They wouldn’t dare try to face this plateau of QB’s without one of the best defensive players in the NFL, would they? Simply put, I’ll be convinced that the Texans do not want to win if they decide to trade Clowney. However, that won’t happen, because they do want to win.

I thought this exact thing, before today. The Texans actually did it. They traded Clowney.

I began the 2019 preseason full of optimism. On paper, the Texans appeared to have one of the most talented rosters in the NFL. Led by QB Deshaun Watson, WR Deandre Hopkins, and DE J.J. Watt, the Texans had a legitimate shot to contend. Even core players like WR Will Fuller, T.E. Jordan Thomas, RB Lamar Miller, WR Keke Coutee, CB Bradley Roby, OLB Whitney Mercilus, ILB Benardrick McKinney, FS Justin Reid, and more made the roster stronger and ready to contend for a Super Bowl.

However, this team is stronger with Jadaveon Clowney, and the Texans just traded him for 2 backup LB’s and a third round pick.

For starters, the Texans handled this entire off-season horribly. They hardly improved by far the worst offensive line in the NFL, they lost key starters in Kareem Jackson and Tyrann Mathieu, passed on numerous free agents who could’ve helped this team despite having the second most cap space in the NFL, and now trading Clowney. The way the Texans handled Clowney was unacceptable. Letting word get out that they were shopping him when he was going to play for them one more season changed the dynamic of the entire season. After today, I’m not so hot on the Texans. The front office has displayed unbelievable incompetence.

Though they still may make the playoffs, it’ll be tough to pick the Texans to go pass the wildcard round this season. They now have a glaring weakness in the front seven. Who’s going to consistently get to the QB besides J.J. Watt and Whitney Mercilus? Will the run defense be the same? The Texans did not get better today. In fact, they may have lost the season today.

Failing to provide protection for your franchise QB, not re-signing your core players back, not being aggressive in the draft, and trading one of your most valuable players? The Texans have made it very clear of what they wanted this off-season.

The Texans do not want to win.
