It has been one of the biggest rumors swirling around the league all year long, Kyrie Irving to the Los Angeles Lakers. Although the dream of Irving rejoining LeBron James in Los Angeles seems like a Hollywood ending, reuniting with the Lakers may be far from reality.
According to Jackie MacMullan of ESPN, many around Irving’s inner circle believe that the six-time all-star will not be signing with the Lakers this summer.
I did a little digging around, and my feeling is very strongly that – while LeBron and Kyrie have kissed and made up – that Kyrie is not going there. He’s just not. I just don’t believe it. And I think people close to him just don’t believe it either.
Another report from ESPN‘s Stephen A. Smith also indicates that rejoining LeBron in Los Angeles “it’s not going to happen.”
“From what I’m told, it’s not going to happen,” Smith said. “I got a text message from folks close to Kyrie’s family, within the hour, as we were teasing this subject. Quote: ‘There is no way in hell he’s going to LA. I don’t give a damn what anybody says, knock that down for us right now, please. He ain’t going to LA.’ That’s what they say.”
The pairing of LeBron and Irving might have worked in the past, and together, the two of them would create the next best Lakers duo since Kobe and Shaq. However, Irving has been clear about carving out his own separate legacy away from James.
Alongside Kevin Durant and Kawhi Leonard, Irving will be one of the most sought after free agents for several NBA teams this summer. However, unlike Durant and Leonard who are in winning situations with their current teams, there is a high possibility that Irving will dawn a new jersey at the start of the 2019-20 season.
According to reports, people close to him are reportedly advising him to strongly consider the Nets. However, resigning with the Celtics or joining the Knicks seems like Irving’s most likely destination.
