As they prepare for a Southwest division showdown against the Dallas Mavericks, the start of the 2018-19 season has been nothing but a disappointment for the New Orleans Pelicans. They are currently standing 15-19 on the season, and if the playoffs started today, the Pelicans will be on the outside looking in as the 14th seed in the Western Conference.

For New Orleans, missing the playoffs would be devastating for a franchise who is trying to persuade Anthony Davis into signing a max contract this summer. However, it is safe to say that the Pelicans would have had a greater chance of keeping their all-star if they contained a few of their key players this past summer.

In an article released by Marc Spears of The Undefeated, former Pelicans star guard, Rajon Rondo, opened up about this departure from the Big Easy. The four-time NBA All-Star said, “the Pelicans could have got a deal done if they wanted me.”

Alvin Gentry, we spoke a lot throughout the summer. I have a lot of respect for Coach G. He gave me hope again that there were good coaches out there. I miss playing for him and miss the guys over there: A.D. [Anthony Davis], Jrue [Holiday], D-Mill [Darius Miller], Ian Clark, Niko [Mirotic]. We all still keep in touch. I wish them health and happiness. The Pelicans could have got a deal if they wanted me, but obviously they went in a different direction. They had money. But they didn’t want to sign ‘Cuz’ [DeMarcus Cousins] and they didn’t want to sign me.

After playing one season in New Orleans, Rondo signed with the Los Angeles Lakers after failing to receive a new contract with the Pelicans this past summer. And his departure from the franchise was an enormous blow to the organization.

While averaging 8.3 points and 8.2 assists, Rondo played a huge part in the Pelicans success last season, especially in the absence of DeMarcus Cousins. He helped the Pelicans upset the Portland Trail Blazers in the first round of the playoffs, and established one of the best backcourts in the league playing next to Jrue Holiday.

Although it remains unclear why the Pelicans gave Rondo (and Cousins) the cold shoulder during free agency, one thing is for certain. If the Pelicans do in fact lose Anthony Davis over the next year or so, the summer of 2018 would be viewed as the beginning of the end for The Brow in NOLA.
