Tiger Talk: Texas Southern

Only way from the bottom to go is up. Prove it.

Successful intent have not been going according to plan for Head Coach Michael Haywood since taking over the Texas Southern Tigers. In his first two seasons at the helm, he’s posted an abysmal 6-16 record including no home wins last season. However, there is a new motto and approach this season. B.A.M; by any means. This motto is fitting considering the lack-luster performances the program has had to endure under Haywood’s tenure.

“By any means necessary we have to win” Haywood told his team. “When adversity is up against you we have to win. Theres no sense in looking up at the clock, it’s 60 minutes. We want to be victorious at the end. We want be physically dominant for 60 minutes and take control of the football game.”

There is a lot of focus on improving every area and level of the team in preparation for Saturday’s home opener against U-T Periman Basin. Emphasizing improvement for offense, defense, and special teams has been key for the tigers during training camp, heading into the season. Even though it has been a point of emphasis, it has not been an easy transition.

“It’s important that as a team we realize that our 2’s and 3s and 3’s have to be dominated on special teams and we haven’t made that transition yet” said Haywood. “We have to do a lot better with the 2s and 3’s playing special teams so that the starters don’t have to play so many plays.”

Another question for the tigers heading into the third season under Coach Haywood, was who is going to the starting quarterback under center? The team announced Sunday via twitter  that the starting quarterback for the season will be former Tulane product Glen Cuillette.  Cuillette,9,  is a graduate transfer and looks to play a big part in the turn around for the Tigers. He has not played in an official game in a year due to transferring from Tulane to the Tigers but he plans to pick up where he left off and grow into the quarterback the Texas Southern needs. While at Tulane University, played in all 12 games with 10 starts. He completed 101-of-237 pass attempts, good for 1,309 yards and a completion percentage of 42.6 and a QB efficiency rate of 96.2. He threw for 10 touchdowns, rushed 120 times for 216 yards, averaging 1.8 yards per carry, including a long of 26 and rushed for one touchdown.

The 2018 season is here and kicks off this Saturday against U-T Periman Basin; who was also 2-9 the previous season. The Tigers must take everything they have worked on during the offseason and training camp to showcase it on the field. As always, the blue print has been laid by Coach Haywood now the players have to perform. What better way to find your identity than to go against a team who is facing similar test and wants to prove the same point you want to prove to them? Pride and Dignity. These two emotions must be felt personally for each and every member of this program, from the AD to the long snapper. Another 2-9 season is unacceptable, fans want to cheer for the players and the school wants to be proud of their guys. Only way from the bottom to go is up. Prove it.
